Sakai Gonomi

This gift set commemorates the relationship between incense and tea. From early times tea and incense have gone hand in hand, tea is always served before the Japanese Incense Ceremony (Kodo), and Incense is commonly burned at the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu).

 The city of Sakai is the birthplace of the famous Tea Master, Sen no Rikyu. The “Tea House” depicted in this set is the famous two-mat tea room named Taian, which is now a Japanese National treasure.

 Sakai is very historical town, and centuries ago it was said that Sakai was the Venice of the Orient. Sakai was the major center of trade for both tea and incense. In these times, Baieido was born, and continues to make the same fine incense today.

 This gift set features incense is made from fine Vietnamese Aloeswood, Indian Sandalwood, Cassia, Patchouli, Clove, and other incense herbs. The incense holder is a depiction of Sen no Rikyu’s Taian tea house.
